The Medals and Plaques of Merit in Commerce were established by Royal Decree 561/2010 of 7 May and are governed by Order ITC/441/2011 of 22 February, which sets out the provisions of the Royal Decree regarding the register of awards granted.
The purpose of the Medals of Merit in Trade is to distinguish individuals, whether Spanish or foreign, who have distinguished themselves significantly through their actions in the field of trade, both nationally and internationally, and through their collaboration with and support for Spanish trade policy in its domestic and external dimensions.
The Commendations for Merit in Trade are intended to recognise the activities carried out by organisations, institutions, bodies and companies – whether public or private, domestic or foreign – that have distinguished themselves through their sustained efforts in undertaking initiatives of particular significance or contribution to the development and improvement of the trade sector, and through their collaboration with the Spanish trade administration.
In 2023, a third category, Women and Internationalisation, was added to the traditional categories of domestic trade and foreign trade, with the aim of recognising the contribution and promotion of women’s participation in the internationalisation of the Spanish economy and advancing equal opportunities.
